Autism in Racing: Overview

Autism in Racing was the idea of racing broadcaster Bobby Beevers, which was brought to life in 2021 as a collaboration between Bobby, Racing Together and the RCA.

Autism in Racing is a further example of the sport’s desire to promote equality, diversity and inclusion at all levels.

Racing Together would like to thank the Racing Foundation for their generous funding of the most recent phase which allowed for 13 autism-friendly racedays to be held across the country, including a very well-received visit to Chapel Stud.

Education

The eLearning module, housed within the sport’s Racing2Learn platform, was created to grow autism awareness. The module was written in collaboration with the Autism Education Trust who have endorsed the content. A certificate of achievement is available to all who complete the course successfully. The resource is available to all who work or are interested in the sport.

First sensory rooms at racecourses

The aim of the steering group was always to encourage racecourses to take ownership and run their own days. So far, both Aintree and Cheltenham have installed their own sensory rooms – each manages and runs the rooms via their in-house teams. In March 2024, Ascot joined them with the launch of their permanent sensory room. Read more about the launch here.

The installation of these sensory rooms allows schools, families and community groups to visit year-round.

You can contact the racecourses directly to find out more information, and bear in mind that during large racing festivals it is unlikely that the sensory rooms will be available.
