Leger Legends take to the track for tomorrow’s charity race

The opening day of the William Hill St Leger Festival, Leger Legends Day, kicks off the four-day fixture with a bang as retired stars of the saddle dust off their breeches and return to action on Town Moor.

The Leger Legends charity race, sponsored by Elwick Stud, is run on the straight mile and helps raise money for Doncaster’s own National Horseracing College (NHC) and Jack Berry House, a rehabilitation facility for injured jockeys.

First run in 2010, the Leger Legends race is the only British charity race for ex-professional jockeys. Previous winners include industry legends AP McCoy, Joseph O’Brien, Brian Harding and Julie Krone.

Growing in popularity year after year, Leger Legends Day is a brilliant opener to the historic festival that also hosts the last Classic of the season.

The funds for NHC are being directed towards additional learner accommodation, which is a necessary development to maximise the number of trained stable staff it can provide for the industry, as well as accommodating fee-paying course attendees on-site.

Silent auction now live

The charity silent auction and charity lunch both raise important funds for the beneficiaries. Silent auction items can be viewed and bids can be placed here: www.legerlegends-auction.com

Winning bids will be announced on Wednesday 11th September 2019 during the Elwick Stud Leger Legends Charity Lunch. Those not present on the day will be contacted after the event.

Runners and riders

It goes without saying that this will be an extremely competitive renewal of the race. Perhaps the best known of the former riders is six-time British champion, Kieren Fallon who can count most of Europe’s top races on his CV, but not the St Leger. Could some compensation await in this popular charity race?
