Alexa Kozaczek-Wright, Engagement Assistant at the National Horseracing College, talks about her work encouraging young people to explore careers in racing

I’m Alexa Kozaczek-Wright, an Engagement Assistant at the National Horseracing College. From a young age, I have always had horses, competing in Pony Club disciplines such as mounted games and showjumping.

My interest in racing was sparked when my older brother completed the Foundation Course at the National Horseracing College, which first introduced me to the sport. I then joined the Youth Collaboration Group with Careers in Racing, where this really opened my eyes to how much more there was to the racing industry, and I gained a great deal of knowledge and experience.

I was lucky enough to secure a place on the Racing Media Academy, where my career really took off. During the week, I worked alongside industry professionals and learned about every aspect of racing media. I completed my placement with Arena Racing Company and went on to work in marketing and then business coordination.

Helping young people discover careers in racing

My most recent career move brought me to the National Horseracing College. As an Engagement Assistant, I travel to different parts of the country talking to individuals about what we offer at the College, as well as assisting with social media, marketing and other responsibilities.

I believe my role is important for racing and for young people, as I am helping to spread awareness of how accessible the sport can be. I explain to many students nationwide  that you don’t need experience, qualifications or your own horse. If you are passionate and hardworking, then an apprenticeship in horseracing could be for you.

No two days are ever the same, which is something I really enjoy. Whether I am attending a careers event, helping to create social media content or supporting open days at the College, I know that I am helping someone take their first step into the industry.

If I can, so can others

Being able to share my own experiences makes those conversations even more meaningful. I understand what it feels like to be unsure about your next steps, and I also know how life-changing it can be when you decide to take an opportunity. For me, being part of that journey for others is incredibly rewarding, and I am proud to play a small part in shaping the future of the sport.

At the National Horseracing College, individuals can begin their journey through the residential Foundation Course, followed by a six-week work placement at a racehorse trainer’s yard.

My advice to anyone thinking about starting a career in horseracing is simple: go for it. There are so many opportunities to explore, and for many people that journey begins with no experience at all.
