Amie Canham, founding member of the Take The Reins advisory group talks about the programme’s pilot year, which has been funded by the Racing Foundation. During the event at Doncaster, a panel provided an overview of the initiative and headline outcomes ahead of an independent impact report. The subsequent Q&A sessions allowed industry representatives present to find out more and offer ideas and support.

About the Programme

Take The Reins is a unique collaboration between youth charities Active Communities Network and Flying Futures, supported by racing industry representatives from Lingfield Park Racecourse, Careers in Racing, Richard Fahey Racing, the National Horseracing College and Racing Together.

The programme aims to provide access and careers in racing for young people regardless of their location or background. Take The Reins includes research projects, personal development programmes, accredited training courses, ambassador visits, open days and careers routes.

Yesterday’s group of students visiting Doncaster were from Malton School. They experienced a varied day, meeting former jockey SammyJo Bell for a tour of the weighing room, followed by interviews with Luke Harvey and Ed Chamberlin. They also got the chance to try out the filming equipment, as well as joining the panel for the programme showcase.
