Chester Race Company continue to support SHARE and families in crisis

Chester Race Company continue to show their support to local charity SHARE through a number of diverse initiatives. The charity aims to support families in crisis and people who are homeless within the city, as well as farther afield through fundraising and volunteering in their city centre store, Share Shop.

As a part of the Chester’s ‘project 1000’ charity mission, a team from the racecourse spent a day recently working in the Share Shop on Northgate Street, organising donations and preparing them for sale in the store. In the Autumn another team of six from the racecourse project assisted with the charity’s office move.

Chester Race Company’s portfolio of eateries and bars: 1539 Restaurant & Bar, The White Horse, Commonhall St Social and the Race Company’s catering division, Horseradish have also supported SHARE’s charity initiative of donating meals to the homeless in Chester.

Adam Dandy, founder and trustee of SHARE said: “We turned to local restaurants to help us in our quest and were met with an overwhelming offer of support by eight top restaurants so far, these include four of Chester Racecourse’s eateries! It’s fair to say that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to Richard Thomas and his team at Chester Racecourse for helping us to feed people who are homeless in the City!”

Other supporting activity included a local group, including local councillors, TV presenters and charity patrons spending a night sleeping rough on the streets of Chester with an aim to raise awareness around homeless, as well as the invaluable work of charities like SHARE. Chester Racecourse offered the grandstand as a place of shelter to the volunteers on what was a cold evening.

“I was grateful to be invited to take part in the sleep out by Chester’s Share Charity,” said Councillor Cllr Richard Beecham. “I think that it is important to try and understand the conditions that some people are finding themselves living in so that we can all work together to make the situation better.”

A generous crowd at the Racecourse firework display in November raised over £4,000 for the charity through bucket collections. The Race Company donated an additional £5,000 from ticket revenues on the evening, bringing the grand total raised to over £9,110.62.

Over the Christmas period, the Racecourse launched a 12 days of kindness campaign on social media and as part of the initiative, Horseradish pledged to donate food and toiletries to the charity. The donation worth over £500 was made earlier this year when Caroline Cadwaladr from SHARE collected the items and took them back to the charity where they were dispatched to vulnerable people across the City.

Chief Executive of Chester Race Company Richard Thomas said: “We have been overwhelmed at the generosity of the public at Racecourse events such as the firework display where a considerable amount was raised. We are committed to building on initiatives in 2019 and will soon announce news of further efforts we will commit to as a business in supporting SHARE’s objectives and our wider community.”
