Community Employers give up their time to create successful Careers Day at Newmarket Academy
As part of the second year of The Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project an ‘Encounters with Employers and Employees’ event was organised. The purpose of the day on November 20th was to give students the opportunity to learn from a range of employers and employees about different work opportunities and the skills that are valued in the workplace.
Employers and employees representing Godolphin; Newmarket Racecourse; Barclays; Careers in Racing; RaceTech and The Racing Centre contributed to the two sessions, which involved 40 Year 9 pupils. A wide variety of work place roles were covered, including human resources; hospitality sales; marketing and recruitment advisor; fitness and leisure co-ordinator; business manager; trainee technical operator and Community Engagement Manager.
The student groups were tasked with putting together a series of questions to find out about various aspects of each ambassador’s job, such as how they got into their current role, what their job entails and what qualifications and skills are required. Ambassadors scored each group individually and decided on a winner from both sessions, with the victorious groups going home with a goody bag from the Beacon sponsors, Godolphin.
The Newmarket Academy Godolphin Beacon Project is delivered by the charity Racing to School and aims to raise the aspiration and ambition of every Academy student. The charity works alongside teachers to create activities to enrich the school curriculum, inspire young people and develop student leadership.
Adam Harman represented the charity at the Careers event. “It was great to speak to the school pupils about my own personal journey that brought me to my current role within the racing industry. I was very impressed with the teamwork that each group had put into their questions; I wish at 13 I had been able to attend these sorts of events to open my eyes to the varied job roles that are available.”
One of the Newmarket Academy Pupils, Holly said: “I really enjoyed the session, it has opened my eyes to a whole industry I hadn’t looked at before, and it’s definitely given me food for thought.”
