Racing Together Community Day 2018
Charities, racecourses and the sport’s regulator are among those in racing looking to volunteer to help others on Friday 11th May. Racing Together Community Day is the sport’s national day of volunteering and we want everyone to find a way to get involved.
Building on the efforts of recent years, racing is asking all parts of the sport to do one simple act – either as a group or on your own to give something back to your community. It’s always good fun and can make a real difference to people’s lives.
Under the Racing Together umbrella, we hope to increase this day of giving back, which some of the 15 racecourses that were involved last year used to announce year-long initiatives aimed at supporting local need. We will be promoting the day via social media and will be using the hashtag #RTday – we encourage all those taking part to do the same. Here’s a snapshot of just some of the contributions from 2017:
• Chester – hosted a Racing to School Day and promoted their CSR programme, Chester 1,000, which has seen racecourse staff donate 1,000 hours between them to help local charities
• Chelmsford City – volunteered at Sanctus, a local shelter and soup kitchen for the homeless
• Aintree – hosted 74 children from Kensington Primary School for careers talks and a tour around the course to learn about the history of the Grand National
• Ascot – donated items to local charities, including spare Royal Ascot picnic blankets
• Beverley – litter picking on the Westwood land alongside the racecourse
• Musselburgh – worked with Musselburgh Grammar School to host pupils and staff for workshops to support their employability needs
• Pontefract – litter picking, on-going maintenance work with local council in Pontefract Park
• Sedgefield – volunteered to help out at Rebecca Menzies’ yard
• Wincanton – worked with the Local Council to plan an event later in the year
• York – organised their own Volunteer day after the Flat season – supported Friends of Chapman’s Pond by volunteering to enhance the ponds surrounding areas
• Staff at the BHA, GBR and the ROA hosted a local school for a special careers day and a special behind the scenes look at the integrity department.
Please commit to do something on or near May 11th and let us know, so we can promote your efforts. To discuss your ideas for the day or how you can get involved, please contact Community Engagement Manager Adam Harman – 07387 260980. E: adam@racingtoschool.co.uk
