Explore Racing Day wins new fans and inspires career choices
Over 65 young people from four different community groups enjoyed the inaugural Explore Racing Day at Newmarket on 24th August. The group, many of whom were first-timers to the sport were involved in activities at The British Racing School and Newmarket Racecourse.
The day started with an introduction to racing presentation given by Careers in Racing’s Zoe Elliot. Zoe outlined the variety of racing that takes place in Great Britain and some of the career paths available across the sport.
The ‘Simulators Room’ was a big hit with the attendees who queued up to try their hand at being a jockey; one young Pony Club member was able to ride while having a race at Royal Ascot playing on the screen.
A tour of The British Racing School introduced the young people to some famous ex-racehorses that now live and work at the School – giving experience to aspiring jockeys.
Following a swift lunch, the group set off to Newmarket Racecourse and a special marquee from where they were given a tour of the racecourse. Then it was up to the stands to watch the first race unfold.
Back at the marquee jockey Daniel Muscutt came over and spoke to each table about his path into the racing world and how passionate he is about the sport.
The youth group Girlhood Active were part of the day and they were given a more in-depth careers talk from Zoe Elliot.
Shannon, 16, said: “It was a really good day, very organised and great fun. The career paths were very interesting. I had no idea how many different avenues are available and I now feel much more knowledgeable on the racing industry as a whole after attending the event.”
Ellie Rance who is currently working in the Careers in Racing team on the BHA Graduate Scheme commented: ‘I really appreciated the chance to help create an opportunity for those who might not normally go racing to explore the industry and see the vast array of career options available. Each of the activities were met with excitement and enthusiasm – particularly the racehorse simulator! A number of the attendees were soon enquiring about the ‘next steps’ to pursue opportunities within horse racing and all left full of praise for the day’.
