Fakenham Racecourse contribute to opening of new community garden for local charity

The Maltings, FitzRoy’s day and community service in Fakenham is now the proud owner of a new garden, thanks to a collaboration between Fakenham Racecourse and Council; the Tesco bags of Help scheme and local businesses.

The racecourse also kindly volunteered their staff and equipment to clear and level the old site prior to the new garden being installed.

The Maltings’ popular garden had been closed after falling into disrepair, having previously been in constant use as a relaxing environment for people who attend the day centre and the local community. It was regularly used by local schools and the public.

The new garden, designed and installed by Fakenham Garden Centre, is higher quality and lower maintenance than the original and has been designed to meet the needs of people with multiple and profound disabilities. It has been professionally resurfaced with paths and raised beds for wheelchair accessibility. A grassed area has been added so that more profoundly disabled people can stretch out in comfort.

Gardening has many positive impacts on mental wellbeing and physical health for people with learning and associated physical disabilities, improving their motor skills and hand-eye coordination.

Service Manager at the Maltings Day and Community Service, Nikki Newstead, said: “We want to say a big thank you to the local businesses and organisations that have helped give money and their time as well. The new garden would not have been possible without generous donations.

“All our members are very excited to have this new outside space and we are really pleased it will be a place for the local community to enjoy again.”

Fakenham racecourse is one of many tracks that seek out opportunities to connect with and support a range of community projects. Chief Executive and Clerk of the Course, David Hunter explained: “Having worked in Fakenham for many years, I was acutely aware of the help, support and invaluable service that FitzRoy provides at the Maltings. I was saddened to see the sorry state of their garden.

“As a local company Fakenham Racecourse wanted to help transform the garden into a lovely area and with our contacts we were able to bring other businesses on board to help. I know the garden will be enjoyed for many years to come.”
