From riding out at Seven Barrows to overseeing fixtures at Bangor-on-Dee: Lily Harris shares how taking new opportunities helped shape her career

I’m Lily Harris, Clerk of the Course and Racing Manager at Bangor-on-Dee Racecourse.

Growing up, I rode ponies and competed in showjumping, but I had always enjoyed watching racing on the TV and was keen to find out more about the sport and the opportunities available within it. After finishing my A-Levels, I joined the British Racing School in Newmarket, where I began my career in racing.

Following completion of my course, I was placed with Nicky Henderson at Seven Barrows in Lambourn. I spent just under five years there as a member of the stable staff and was fortunate enough to ride some really nice horses and lead up at some of racing’s biggest meetings.

I also returned to the British Racing School to complete a Racing Secretary’s Course, broadening my understanding of the industry and the variety of career opportunities available within it.

Young people need on-going support

In May 2023, I joined Chester Race Company as a Racing Executive. This role provided a combination of administration duties as well as practical experience out on the track. I spent time with the Ground Staff, developing a deeper understanding of the work that goes into preparing the track and this is what naturally led to my progression into training to become a Clerk of the Course.

I feel very fortunate to have been given these opportunities and am grateful to those who have helped me along the way. It’s important that the industry continues to support young people looking to progress within racing by demonstrating the breadth of roles available and encouraging them to pursue their interests within the sport.

Life of a Clerk of the Course

A typical day in the lead-up to racing at Bangor begins with walking the track alongside the Head Groundsman. We assess the current going, determine what conditions we are aiming to provide on raceday and decide how best to achieve that, while closely monitoring the weather forecast throughout the week.

I also liaise with owners and trainers who require updates on the ground conditions ahead of declarations and racedays.

I have always loved racing, particularly jump racing given my background at Seven Barrows, so it is a privilege to work in a role where I can contribute to the sport every day. I am also fortunate to work alongside an excellent team of Ground Staff whose expertise and support make the role both rewarding and enjoyable.

My advice to anyone considering a career as a Clerk of the Course would be to develop a thick skin, as there will inevitably be challenging days. However, if you are willing to work hard, embrace every opportunity to learn and enjoy the experience, it can be an incredibly rewarding career.
