Henderson flies the flag at Lambourn, while Hammond yard comes out on top in Yorkshire

The Lambourn Valley Housing Trust and Thames Valley Air Ambulance did not miss out on support from Good Friday’s Lambourn Open Day as top jumps trainer Nicky Henderson was able to welcome the public to his yard. The trainer may have been alone in being able to open his doors, but with a reduced ticket price and some superstars on show, a great day was had by all.

Gold Cup runner-up Might Bite and Champion Hurdler Buveur D’Air were on show and Sir Anthony McCoy also jetted in from Barbados, posing for photographs and signing autographs for the damp yet enthusiastic crowd.

Nicky Henderson tweeted: ‘”Thank you to all of you for attending today’s Lambourn Open Day and helping raise lots of cash in the process. It was great to see everyone and I hope you enjoyed the day. Special thanks must also go to my hard-working staff for all their efforts in atrocious weather conditions.”

Up in Yorkshire, the Middleham Open day enjoyed better luck with the weather, with a full schedule taking place. Fundraiser Jack Lander was volunteering for the day and local artist Jo Stockdale was present at Chris Fairhurst’s yard selling a wide range of her new and original drawings. One of the many highlights of the day included race fans been given the chance to meet the astonishing Shetland Pony, Little Alf who has five books published about him.

The afternoon activities included an inter-yard competition, which was won by Micky Hammond’s team after success in the show jumping contest, donkey Derby and egg and spoon race.

The Racing Welfare twitter account tweeted of the day: ‘”Brilliant day once again at the Middleham Open Day. A huge thank you to all those involved and everyone who came to support us. We hope you all had a great day.”
