Careers Course attracts over 80 delegates for unique insight into sport’s opportunities

Last month, The Thoroughbred Club (TTC) hosted its Careers Course, supported by the Racing Foundation, Weatherbys and the TBA.  Over 80 delegates from around the UK attended the two-day course held at Tattersalls, which was open to all and aimed at not just those working in the industry, but those who are interested in choosing a career path into the wide-ranging racing and breeding industries.

Day 1 – focus on breeding industry

The first day offered a range of talks focussed on the breeding industry and included workshop-style sessions on various subjects including Stallion Nominations, Thoroughbred Nutrition and Bloodstock Agency.  The day also included visits to either Cheveley Park Stud or the Newmarket Equine Hospital. In the evening, delegates and industry personnel gathered together for an informal evening at the Jockey Club Rooms.

Day 2 – wider industry

The second day of the course was dedicated to the wider industry. The morning sessions provided insights into the educational opportunities as well as informative talks about the roles of the BHA and Weatherbys. Following a visit to either Amy Murphy’s Southgate Stables or Godolphin’s Hamilton Hill Stables, a range of workshops was offered covering topics from Accountancy, Thoroughbred Training and Industry Marketing.

Attendee Rebecca said: “The overall experience was brilliant. I am so grateful for the opportunity and the different aspects of the industry that it has opened my eyes to. The visits to the two yards were amazing. I was not expecting to be able to get up close with the horses. That was a real highlight given that I have a passion for horses, but no access to racehorses.”

Thoroughbred Chairman, Christian Williams added: “Thanks to the support of The Racing Foundation, Weatherbys and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, TTC was able to deliver a course which offered delegates a fascinating overview of the diverse and rewarding careers across the racing and breeding industry.  As custodians of the thoroughbred, the next generation of trainers, stud managers, agents and stable/stud staff are fundamentally key to securing the future of the breed. It’s fantastic that an initiative like TTC will have a positive impact on that future, as well as the careers of many young people in the industry.”
