Jango Baie’s Cheltenham Gold Cup prize money set to benefit racing charities

Owner Tony and Donna Barney have confirmed that the £132,500 prize money earned by Jango Baie for finishing second in the Cheltenham Gold Cup will be donated to charity.

Tony Barney revealed the decision in an interview with ITV Racing’s Rishi Persad after the race, explaining that the family had originally planned to donate the winnings if the Nicky Henderson-trained gelding had won.

Despite finishing runner-up, the family confirmed the prize money will still be shared between Retraining of Racehorses (RoR), the Injured Jockeys Fund, and the James Barney Foundation.

The James Barney Foundation was established in 2015 in memory of Barney’s son, and supports children and young people facing challenging circumstances through a range of projects in the UK and overseas. The charity works with partner organisations to fund and support initiatives including children’s hospices, rehabilitation projects and childcare provision, alongside work with schools, orphanages and community organisations in countries such as Uganda, Mexico and the Dominican Republic.

Barney said the donation would be divided between the two racing charities and his son’s foundation as a way of thanking the racing industry for the support he has received.
