Newmarket provides the stage for charitable donation
The proceeds of the Glenn Roeder Raceday were formally presented to The Brain Tumour Charity at Newmarket’s Rowley Mile Racecourse yesterday.
Sally Williams, the charity’s Philanthropy Manager, received a cheque for more than £160,000 from the Roeder family following the fundraising event staged at the July Course this summer in honour of the former footballer and manager, Glenn Roeder, who lost his battle with the disease in February 2021 at the age of 65.
Fundraising activities at the Glenn Roeder Raceday held on Saturday, 23 July extended beyond the VIP marquee where 360 guests took part in a live auction, prize draws and competitions to an international online auction supported by leading sports personalities and organisations, bucket collections at venues around the UK and a JustGiving page in the name of Glenn Roeder.
Responding on behalf of The Brain Tumour Charity Sally Williams said, “Everyone at The Brain Tumour Charity has been completely blown away by the incredible support from The Glenn Roeder Race Day and the quite remarkable amount raised from such a fantastic event. I was fortunate to attend the race day in July and could feel the genuine love and respect for Glenn, Holly and the whole family which was also clearly demonstrated by the huge amount raised!
“Brain tumours remain the biggest cancer killer of children and adults under 40 and reduce average life expectancy by 27 years – the highest of any cancer. The work that The Brain Tumour Charity does to double survival rates and halve the harm that brain tumours have on quality of life simply would not happen without the fantastic support from people like Holly and everyone who supported through The Glenn Roeder Race Day. A very, very big thank you to Holly and all those involved in putting the day together and of course to everyone who donated.”
The Brain Tumour Charity is the world’s largest dedicated funder of pioneering research into brain tumours. The Charity also raises awareness of the signs and symptoms of the disease to reduce diagnosis times and provides vital support and information to those with a brain tumour diagnosis now.
Event organiser Holly Roeder said, “It’s such a thrill to be able to support the work of The Brain Tumour Charity with this donation and we are all incredibly grateful to everyone who helped with the fundraising and gave Dad’s family and friends a wonderful day to remember.”
