Record number of racecourses commit to volunteering on Racing Together Community Day

Racing Together Community Day has inspired the sport to find creative ways to helps its communities. Ten courses are already signed up to the ‘Big Switch Off’ – a simple idea to help both the planet and the bank balance by choosing a good period to switch off the power of dormant machine and facilities. We’re sure many other courses will soon come on board.

The BHA has been engaged with various activities, including hosting a Careers & Activity day for pupils from the Evelyn Grace Academy in Brixton. The day was run in partnership with Racing Together, Careers in Racing and youth charity Active Communities Network.

Staff from Racing to School, Careers in Racing and the BHA Disciplinary and Medical teams were busy mucking out at the rehoming centre, Greatwood. Members of the BHA’s Racing team dropped in to Age UK Camden to get the gardens ready for summer.

Up in Scotland, staff from Perth racecourse were also getting green fingers, spending the morning on the banks of the beautiful River Tay.

All five courses in Scotland have announced a collaboration with Alzheimers Scotland to run their free dementia workshops with the ambition that all venues will be recognised as ‘dementia friendly’.

It was a busy day up at Mussleburgh racecourse today and on hand to help out with the hospitality for the BHA Industry Roadshow at the racecourse were students from the nearby Grammar School. Serving teas and coffees to attendees was no doubt a welcome break from lessons.

There was plenty more activity on Racing Together Community day and a real momentum behind the value and the simple enjoyment of working together as a sport to help others.
