Amateur riders head to York for ‘Ride of Their Lives’ race for Macmillan Cancer Support

Twelve riders from across the UK will be lining up for one of Britain’s most successful charity horse races this Friday, 24 September.  After a 15-month delay because of the pandemic, the riders will be taking part in the Ernest Cooper Macmillan ‘Ride of Their Lives’ race at York Racecourse – part of a new race meeting at York for 2021.

The amateur riders were selected for the race back in December 2019 and were originally due to ride in June 2020. The charity challenge sees members of the public completing months of intense jockey training before racing thoroughbred horses on York’s iconic course.

The line-up includes eight amateur riders from Yorkshire including, including Sean Quinn, Lois Teal, SJ Barker and Wendy Midgely from Malton, Natasha Nelson from Sheriff Hutton, Ria Ginley from Coulton, Claire Shepherd from Askwith and Kelsi Langley from York.

The riders pledged to raise a minimum of £4,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support, so far, they have collectively raised over £140,000.  This will help Macmillan provide vital support to people living with cancer across the region.

The race will coincide with the Macmillan’s flagship fundraising Coffee Morning event, which sees people come together to raise funds for people living with cancer. With registrations for the fundraising event down for the second year running it’s no exaggeration to say Macmillan and people with cancer have never needed the public’s support more than they do now.

Racing fans can support the riders on Friday 24 September by donating on their JustGiving pages here, and by attending the raceday.

For further information and to book tickets visit the York Racecourse website.
