Windsor kicks off Easter family fun fixtures

Royal Windsor got a hop on during the Easter school holidays by hosting an ‘Easter Eggstravaganza’ on April 15. The sunshine brought the crowd, which certainly surpassed the number of regular patrons that might have otherwise made their way to the unique Thameside track on spring and summer Mondays.

Young racegoers criss-crossed the parade rings, winners’ enclosure and eating areas in search of Easter egg clues that once pieced together earned a goody bag and entry into a prize draw to win a fantastic family package for the popular attraction, Odds Farm Park.

A mobile farm was set up near the parade ring with a menagerie of rabbits; guinea pigs; two rather aloof goats; some high-spirited geese and a solitary hedgehog who slept through the entire fun and games. The racecourse also offered face painting, a couple of bouncy castles and enough ice cream vans to keep all ages amused and satisfied.

Action out on the racecourse did not disappoint, with a smart debut from Lambeth Walk in the novice race for fillies and a very promising first win from a potential Group-race contender in the shape of the Hughie Morrison-trained Telecaster, who dominated this race and his 15 rivals and is now likely to be fast-tracked to square up to the best of his generation.

A great day’s entertainment with plenty of first-time visitors now aware of racing’s appeal to all the family. Brighton host a Mad Hatters Raceday, while Nottingham adopt a Vintage theme, and Plumpton host a two-day Easter Festival, to name just a few of more than 15 Easter-themed family fixtures on or around the bank holiday weekend. Those under the age of 18 can attend free of charge with a paying adult and racing is one of the few sports and visitor attractions that can provide such good value for a family day out.
